So I searched like crazy and couldn't find any solution and decided to sacrifice my pics and vids. Select Boot options ( usually f9), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter. You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.

I have a Presario 2100 laptop which has started to play DVD's jerkily, and doesn't always correctly recognise a CD-ROM when placed in the drive. I have cleaned the drive. Frustratingly, the problem is intermittent! I have just fired it up now and it is playing a DVD fine (typical, first time in months!) - but yesterday evening it wouldn't play a DVD smoothly, and wouldn't read a CD-ROM at all - just imagined a single file on it and then froze. I need this to be reliable again for video presentations - any thoughts please? I've got one of these things, and I bought a replacement drive thinking the old one had gone bad. What I found was that regardless of which of the drives I inserted in the docking bay for the DVD drive (replaceable by the consumer, so points for style for Compaq), the drive operated intermittently.
To be frank, I think it's the connector and has nothing to do with the drive itself or the drivers. Removing the drive and reinserting it sometimes makes the drive work. The fact that so many Presario F700's have this problem indicates a problem with the connecter on the motherboard itself. Unfortunately, I don't know a good way to repair this.
